Overview

"Uhud is a mountain that loves us and that we love"[1]. Mount Uhud received these emotions from the Messenger of Alla ﷺ and was mentioned in many hadiths. It is the largest and highest mountain of Medina and one of the most important historical evidences in Islamic history. The mountain is composed of fiery red rocks and is located north of Medina, 4 km from Haram al-Sharif. It stretches from southeast to northwest and is 7 km long and 3 km wide.

The mention of Mount Uhud is connected with the famous historical battle of Uhud (3 hijri, corresponding to 625 A.D.), which the attacking Quraish from Mecca imposed on the Muslims from Medina. The fledgling Muslim community lost about 75 fighters in the battle. The reason was that the group of archers, who had been forbidden by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to abandon their position, saw the approaching victory and therefore abandoned their position and participated in the pursuit of the Quraish. The tombs of the martyrs from this battle, among whom is the Prophet's uncle Hamza ibn Abd Al-Muttalib, extend at the foot of the mountain.

The Prophet ﷺ went up Mount Uhud accompanied by Abu Bakr, Othman and Omar -Allah's pleasure be upon them-. Then the mountain shook beneath them and the Prophet struck it with his foot and said, "Be quiet Uhud! For on you is a Prophet, a truthful one (Siddiq) and two martyrs"[2].
