Overview

Another extremely popular location is the most famous mountain in Makkah (also called Mount As-Salam). Here started the beginning of the last Abrahamic religion, Islam. Through Mohammad -peace and blessings upon him- the revelation was sent down with the help of the angel Gabriel. This mountain has an area of 5250 square kilometers and is located four kilometers northeast of Al-Haram Mosque. It contains the cave of Hira where the Prophet -Peace and blessings upon him- retired from Islam. Aischa -God's pleasure be upon her- reported that he usually worshipped God in seclusion in Hira Cave continuously during many nights[1].

The Hira cave is located at an altitude of 634 meters. Inside the cave there is room for only four to five people. The top of the mountain provides a great overview of Makkah. It is important to mention that the cave has no important religious significance in modern times, because the Prophet did not visit it after the revelation. Therefore, it is not a place for the performance of certain worship[2].
