Overview

One of the greatest rituals of Hajj and the most important of these is standing in Arafat. This holy place has been mentioned in the Quran, Allah says: "But if you have come from Arafat, remember Allah at the protected place of worship"[1]. Whoever misses standing in Arafat has missed the Hajj, because the Messenger ﷺ said: "The Hajj is Arafa"[2].

The time to stand is between the zenith of the sun (noon time) on the day of Arafa (9th day of Dhul Hijjah) until Fajr of the next day. The area of Arafat -also called Arafa- is located outside the boundaries of Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca and is a flat area, about 22 km away from Mecca. It has an area of about 10.4 square kilometers. The "Mountain of Mercy" is located in this area where pilgrims fight for their place. It was in this place that the Prophet delivered the famous farewell sermon.
