Overview

Medina is famous for many historical mosques of great Islamic significance and each of these mosques has an own history. In Al-Ghamama Mosque (Al-Musalla), the Prophet ﷺ prayed the Eid prayer, for the last time in the year 10 Hijri (631 AD). There he also prayed the rain prayer and the absentee prayer for the Negus. Al-Ghamama literally means "the cloud". This mosque received its name because of a cloud that blocked the sun during the Prophet's prayer so that it would not shine on his face.

Al-Ghamama Mosque is located on the west side south of the Prophet's Mosque, 500 meters from Bab Al-Salam. Due to its proximity to the Prophet's Mosque, no prayers are held there. The mosque was built during the time of Khalifa Omar bin Abdul Aziz between the year 86 and 93 Hijri and was renovated and reformed several times, most recently in the year 1431 to 1434 Hijri.
